How To

Antivirus Stuff

These pages are no longer kept up to date as we're moving to afewbeers and want you to join us over there.

Keep Up To Date
  • Use the Windows Update on your pc to get the latest updates from microsoft - many of these block security threats to your pc
  • Once you have antivirus software, you MUST update it at least once a week, twice weekly is better. This should be free for a year at least.
  • You will have to read the Help file to find out how to update in your particular program. There may be an automatic download of updates or you may have to go to the website to get them
  • Make sure your antivirus program is set to scan files as they are opened and not only when you choose to scan them
Safety Why - To keep your data safe and to prevent hackers from clogging up the internet needlessly

How -
  • UPDATE as above
  • Don't open files that have .exe .pif or .scr after their names (see View File Types below) unless they are from a known source. exe files are excecutable programs and .scr files are screensavers.
  • Use a firewall - software that blocks unrequested incoming and/or outgoing information while you are connected to the internet. A well reknown, free firewall is ZoneAlarm.
View File Types You need to see what type of file you are opening to help prevent virus infection and so you know what program is needed on your pc for the file to open.
  • Click each of the following - Start, Programs, Windows Explorer
  • Click the Tools menu, then Folder Options and then the View tab in the pop up box
  • Uncheck Hide File extensions for known file types (You may need to scroll down to find this option) and click OK
  • All your files will now have an extension after their names. Common extensions are .doc for Word files, .xls for Excel files, .jpg or .bmp or .gif for graphic files .pps for Power Point presentations and I think Works files are .wks
